Decennials: An Ancient Timing Technique

For my Year 3 graduate project in the Fundamentals of Astrology program, I presented on Decennials, or Planetary Decades—an ancient timing technique described by Firmicus Maternus in his 4th-century text, Mathesis. This method divides the life into successive periods of approximately 10 years and 9 months, each governed by one of the seven traditional planets, beginning with the sect light of the chart.

The presentation began with a structured overview of how to calculate and apply the Decennials within the context of a natal chart, highlighting its interpretive logic and practical applications. I then demonstrated the technique through five case studies featuring well-known public figures, illustrating how Decennials can be used to trace significant personal and professional developments through the lens of traditional astrology.

This presentation was designed for intermediate-level students, and assumed familiarity with Hellenistic principles, including sect, planetary condition, and assessment of the natal promise.

Studying with Austin Coppock over the course of three years in the Fundamentals of Astrology program has been one of the most formative experiences of my astrological education. Austin's approach—both philosophically grounded and technically rigorous—continues to shape the way I think about charts, timing, and the craft as a whole.

His clear teaching style, depth of knowledge, and generosity with students created an environment where real learning and inquiry could take root. Not only did I gain tools and techniques that I use in daily practice, but I also developed a framework for interpreting astrology that is intellectually coherent and spiritually resonant.

I’m especially grateful for the opportunities Austin offered me to share my work within the community through tutoring and presenting. Those invitations played a meaningful role in my development as a practitioner and teacher, and I would not be where I am in my practice without them.

This program is a gift to anyone serious about deepening their relationship with astrology—technically, philosophically, and professionally.
